The Alberta Rural Renewal Stream is a program introduced by the Alberta provincial government that aims to support the attraction and retention of newcomers in rural communities. The workforce in rural communities has been shrinking as people retire or move to cities. Immigrants prefer living and working in cities. As a result of all of these factors, this stream was introduced, and it solved the problem by giving rural communities an incentive to hire foreign nationals. These foreign nationals live and work there and contribute greatly to the local economies. For a community in Alberta to be eligible, it must be outside of the Calgary and Edmonton Metropolitan areas and it must also have a population below 100,000. The employer can either recruit temporary foreign workers directly or they can apply for the Alberta Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP), which connects them to refugees.
